A Brief History

In response to requests for more artistic activity in the Somerset area, Sal Hodgson and Anne Cherry founded the Somerset School of Dancing in 1970.

After being the first Bermudian ballet school to hold examinations administered by the British Ballet Organization in 1971, the school became affiliated with the universally recognized Royal Academy of Dancing in 1982.

In 1987, the school expanded to the Hamilton area with classes being held at the Masonic hall on King street. 1990 saw the need yet again for larger premises and the new studio was opened hosted by a fully qualified staff trained specifically in Dance Education.

In May 2007 the school made it's biggest move yet to our new dance studio's on the top floor of the Old Berkeley school extention. With our bright and airy new space housing three large air conditioned studio's all with fully sprung floors and mirrors, the school continues to grow and maintain it's standards as a top class dance facility, we continue to gain recognition as a school with the highest standard in classical training.

Mrs Hodgson and staff attend extensive teachers courses with the Royal Academy of Dance to remain abreast of modern teaching methods.   Presently, we offer classes in ballet, tap and Jazz dance to over 350 students.

Learning to walk sets you free.
Learning to dance gives you the greatest freedom of all:
to express your whole self, the person you are.
